On 21 May, Europe celebrates Natura 2000 Day, a date dedicated to raising awareness of the value of the continent’s largest network of protected natural areas. Made up of more than 27,000 sites, this network combines the conservation of habitats and species with sustainable human activities. The aim of the celebration is to increase public understanding of the importance of these territories for biodiversity and to highlight their essential role in safeguarding key ecosystems across Europe.
The date marks the anniversary of the Habitats Directive, adopted on 21 May 1992, a landmark piece of European legislation which, together with the Birds Directive, enabled the creation and consolidation of the Natura 2000 network. Since then, the day has been celebrated under the motto “The simple flutter of a butterfly can change the world”, encouraging people to take part in conservation initiatives and to recognise the natural and social value of these protected areas.
