The Natural Heritage Mission community will hold the thematic webinar “Water Challenges and Opportunities in the Mediterranean” on 27 May 2026, an online session focused on the main challenges related to water governance and sustainable water management in the Mediterranean region. The event will bring together experts and representatives from European and international organisations to share approaches, strategies and lines of action on water policy.

The session will open with welcome remarks by Marilena Mochianaki Karampatzaki from the Region of Crete, followed by a keynote session on water governance and policy. This block will address the global and European water policy context, as well as the Mediterranean WEFE Nexus Strategy and Action Framework. Speakers will include Facundo Odriozola, Agriculture Officer at IUCN EURO, and Dr. Anthi Brouma, Deputy Regional Coordinator and Theme Leader on Water Governance, Sustainable Financing and Gender+ at Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med). A Q&A session will also be included.

The programme will continue with the presentation of the Natural Heritage Mission’s 2026 advocacy roadmap on water by Lucía Prieto from IUCN Med. Afterwards, Pedro Fernández from MedCities will lead an interactive discussion using the Miro platform, aimed at transforming the results of the water survey into future advocacy actions for the Mission. The webinar will conclude with closing remarks and next steps, once again led by the Region of Crete.
