World Oceans Day 2026, celebrated globally on 8 June, will focus on the theme “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet”, highlighting the critical role of marine protected areas (MPAs) in safeguarding ocean biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Led by the United Nations and supported by a wide network of environmental organisations, scientific institutions and policymakers, the 2026 edition will call for stronger commitments to ocean conservation at a time of mounting pressure on marine ecosystems from climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. The campaign aims to reinforce the importance of protecting at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 as part of global sustainability and climate goals.
Through international conferences, awareness campaigns, educational initiatives and community-led actions, World Oceans Day 2026 will bring together governments, NGOs, businesses, researchers and citizens to promote healthier and more resilient oceans. Particular attention will be given to the expansion and effective management of marine protected areas, recognising them as essential tools for preserving marine life, supporting coastal communities and maintaining the health of the planet. As oceans continue to play a central role in climate regulation and global biodiversity, the event will serve as a powerful platform to accelerate international cooperation and inspire collective action for the future of our blue planet.
