The final event of the European Germ of Life project took place from May 27 to 29, in Patras, as part of the International Conference of the Balkan and Black Sea Commission (BBSC) of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR). It was organized in collaboration with the Permanent International Secretariat of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC PERMIS) and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC).
The main objective of the Germ of Life project, which is co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED 2021-2027 program with funding from national and European sources, is to create an innovative system of digital technologies to improve the preventive management of drought risks. The project is implemented by 10 organizations from six Euro-Mediterranean countries (Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, and Cyprus), with the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Patras serving as the lead partner. It is based on jointly developed and customized solutions utilizing both ground-based and satellite data.
Representatives of all the partners attended the events in Patras, while the speakers at the main event on Friday, May 29, were Professor of the Department of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Patras, Athanasios Argyriou, Germ of Life Leader Project; the General Director of Achaia Anaptyxiaki, Coordinator for the Regional Unit of Achaia, and Vice President of the european network ELARD, Iro Tsibri; Communications Officer of the NEREUS Network, Margarita Chrysaki; and Professor Enric Aguilar, Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Energy Transition at the University of Tarragona in Spain.
Representing the Region of Western Greece, which is a partner in the project, was the Deputy Governor of Achaea, Fokion Zaimis, who spoke of “one of the most important and thematically timely European projects being implemented and completed in an exemplary manner, setting the tone for cooperation and shared understanding among Mediterranean countries and Europe as a whole on issues related to climate and the environment”.
Responsible for the coordination on behalf of the Region of Western Greece is Konstantina Lantavou, who serves as the project manager, with the support of the Civil Protection Department of Achaea.
