3 March, also known as World Wildlife Day, commemorates the signing of the CITES convention in 1973, the international treaty that regulates trade in endangered species. This day, promoted by the UN, is a tribute to the planet’s biodiversity and a reminder of our shared responsibility to halt habitat loss and species extinction. It seeks to raise awareness of the benefits that wild fauna and flora provide to humanity — ranging from medicines to food security — and the importance of combating environmental crimes that jeopardise the balance of life on Earth.
In 2026, the official theme moves away from general technology to focus on a vital subject: “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving health, natural heritage and livelihoods”. This year’s edition shines a light on human dependence on these species, which form the foundation of both traditional and modern medicine. The 2026 campaign highlights that one in five people worldwide relies on wild plants and fungi for their health and sustenance, urging governments and citizens to protect these botanical resources which are essential for both our cultural heritage and the resilience of global ecosystems.
