Water plays a pivotal role in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to build resilience safeguarding ecosystems and communities. World Water Week 2025 will focus on addressing the linked emergencies of climate change, environment degradation and biodiversity loss, emphasizing both mitigation and adaptation, alongside the broader goal of enhancing resilience.
As the organizer of World Water Week, SIWI believes that water professionals have a crucial role to play in this global effort. Not only is water the main medium through which global heating impacts human society, but it is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and to carbon storage at the global scale. From both those viewpoints, improved water management is a tool to help policy makers achieve their climate aims. A stable supply of freshwater is also essential to deliver on the SDGs and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
We have a shared responsibility to keep the sources of fresh water within ranges typical of the past few thousand years during which human civilizations evolved. That freshwater is needed for all ecosystems functions including sequestering carbon, growing food, producing energy and stabilizing the biome.
