Every 23 March, the global community celebrates World Meteorological Day, a date that commemorates the entry into force in 1950 of the convention establishing the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). This specialised agency of the United Nations was created to promote international cooperation in the study of the atmosphere and the management of water resources. The celebration seeks to raise awareness of the critical role that meteorological and hydrological services play in protecting life and property, as well as in the economic stability of sectors such as agriculture and transport, emphasising that climate science is the most powerful tool for understanding the balance of our planet.

In the 2026 edition, under the slogan ‘Observe today, protect tomorrow’, the focus is on the definitive integration of artificial intelligence and big data to close the gap in early warning systems globally. After a 2025 marked by historic heat records, the WMO is highlighting this year the importance of strengthening the atmospheric and oceanic observation network as the only way to build real climate resilience. The 2026 campaign calls for collective action to ensure that every corner of the Earth is protected by accurate forecasts and cutting-edge technologies, securing a future where science allows us to anticipate and mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.
