World Climate Day is a day dedicated to reflecting on the importance of climate and raising global awareness about the effects of climate change. It was established in 1992 during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with the aim of alerting people to climate variations caused mainly by industrial development, population growth and greenhouse gas emissions. These changes have intensified phenomena such as global warming, the greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion and the overexploitation of natural resources, directly affecting the planet’s natural cycles and putting the lives of millions of species, including humans, at risk.
The climate has a decisive influence on essential activities such as agriculture, fishing and ecosystem conservation. Since the 1970s, there have been steady increases in temperature due to the use of fossil fuels, and extreme phenomena such as hurricanes, droughts and unusual rainfall have intensified. In this context, World Climate Day seeks to raise awareness and promote sustainable actions, from reducing emissions and responsible consumption to promoting global policies that mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect the future of the planet.
