22 April marks International Mother Earth Day, a date proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight the interdependence between human beings, other species and the planet we inhabit. This day underscores the urgent need to take action in the face of global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and the degradation of ecosystems. The UN notes that phenomena such as the increase in plastics in the oceans, forest fires, extreme heat and floods are affecting millions of people and demanding immediate responses to restore and protect the health of the planet.
The commemoration also serves to promote a shift towards more sustainable development models, drive the restoration of ecosystems and foster a harmonious relationship with nature. Although the origins of this modern celebration date back to 1970, with the demonstrations and campaigns led by Senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson, the UN officially established International Mother Earth Day in 2009. Since then, every 22 April, governments, businesses, educational institutions and the public are invited to take part in activities, discussions and actions that contribute to the well-being of the planet.
