Digitalisation and AI to transform environmental management

25/03/2026

Digitalisation is transforming environmental management, bringing information closer to citizens in a clearer, more useful and accessible way. In this context, the Regional Ministry of Sustainability and Environment of the Government of Andalusia is promoting a range of digital tools that facilitate consultation, analysis and decision-making, in line with European initiatives such as the Germ of Life project, in which the Andalusian government participates as a partner through this ministry.

At the heart of this progress is the Environmental Information Network of Andalusia (REDIAM), which has established itself as the largest regional environmental information network in Europe and a pioneering initiative of its kind. It currently hosts more than 4,500 publicly available datasets and over 2,000 interoperable geographic data services, accessible under international standards, ensuring the reliability, compatibility and reuse of information.

One of the key resources is the REDIAM geoportal, a platform that functions as a large interactive map of the territory. Through its viewers, users can consult information on protected areas, vegetation, water quality or soils, combining different layers according to their needs. This tool enables everything from project planning to environmental analysis, or simply gaining a better understanding of the surroundings in an intuitive and visual way.

In addition, the INDIFO and INDICA statistical viewers simplify access to complex data. With just a few clicks, users can obtain detailed forestry information or identify environmental constraints affecting a specific plot of land. They also allow the generation of automated, verifiable and shareable reports, streamlining administrative procedures and providing greater certainty for studies and projects.

The digital ecosystem is further enhanced by tools such as the climate scenarios viewer, which helps anticipate the effects of climate change across different areas of Andalusia, as well as specific coastal viewers designed to assess risks in coastal zones and improve resilience to extreme events.

All this information is available through the Environmental Portal of Andalusia, which acts as a one-stop platform bringing together thousands of datasets, maps and resources in different formats. Access is open and designed for all types of users, from technical professionals and businesses to researchers, students and the general public.

Moreover, the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud-based solutions enables the automation of processes and the rapid, reliable generation of reports, reducing timeframes and improving the quality of available information.

During the presentation of these tools, the Regional Minister for Sustainability and Environment, Catalina García, underlined the aim of this technological commitment: “Our priority is to make the complex simple: to ensure that the best environmental information is available in just a few clicks, with layers, metadata and reports ready to support faster and better decision-making. Andalusia is a benchmark in digitalisation for sustainability, and we will continue to expand and improve these tools.”

For her part, the Secretary General for Environment and Climate Change, María López Sanchís, highlighted the practical value of these resources, which are already being used in areas such as environmental impact assessments, the processing of grants and the identification of suitable locations for new projects.

With this momentum, Andalusia is moving towards a more efficient, transparent and data-driven model of environmental management, while also strengthening its role in European innovation through its participation in initiatives such as Germ of Life.
