The International Day of Forests was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 with the aim of honouring the importance of all types of forests and raising global awareness about their protection. Each year, countries are encouraged to organise local, national and international initiatives related to forests and trees, such as tree‑planting campaigns, educational activities and community engagement efforts.

For the 2026 edition, the chosen theme is “Forests and Economies”, highlighting the essential role forests play as engines of economic prosperity. This role extends well beyond income and employment generated by forest production or the trade of renewable raw materials: forests support family and community farming, enhance agricultural productivity and safeguard the health of watershed ecosystems. At a time when many countries are striving towards a sustainable bio‑economy, forest‑based products provide nature‑based solutions that can replace carbon‑intensive materials while also creating new economic opportunities. For these reasons, the 2026 campaign emphasises that forests are indispensable for healthy economies, both today and for future generations.
