The International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated every 14 March. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of rivers as sources of clean water, biodiversity and livelihoods for millions of people. It was established in 1997 after a meeting in Curitiba, Brazil, where representatives from 20 countries agreed to promote global mobilisation against the negative impacts of large dams and the increasing degradation of river ecosystems. The date seeks to highlight the need to protect these natural spaces from threats such as pollution, overexploitation and biodiversity loss.
The organisation that leads and promotes this day internationally is International Rivers, a global entity dedicated to defending rivers and the communities that depend on them. This organisation coordinates campaigns, encourages citizen participation and works to denounce projects that compromise the health of rivers and associated human rights.
