Germ of Life project presentation at the 3rd ISE Innovation Camp

02/11/2025

Germ of Life has participated in the 3rd ISE Innovation Camp, organized by the Innovative Sustainable Economy Euro-MED Mission, with the collaboration of the Joint Research Centre, and has been held in the Portuguese city of Olhao. The meeting’s motto was: “Connecting place-based innovation ecosystems and interregional networks to deliver more effective responses to climate change in the Mediterranean”.

The ISE Innovation Camps are capacity building events, fostering inspired and facilitated exchanges among actors from the four helixes of the innovation ecosystem, engaged in Mediterranean sustainable development at regional and territorial level. The camps are spaces for capacity-building to test in practice the tools and frameworks of the ISE Mission, allowing an open and facilitated debate.

In the session ‘Innovation Showcase: Transformative Solutions in Action’, Flavia Duarte, Chief Operational Officer of IrRadiare Science for Evolution, introduced Germ of Life as one of the Natural Heritage Mission projects, among several innovative initiatives addressing common challenges and building a shared vision for the future.

Lea Duran, Data Scientist at Atos, is very involved in the technological structuring of the Germ of Life platform using artificial intelligence tools and predictive models. At the ISE Innovation Camp, she explained the transformative solutions that Germ of Life offers for challenges such as water scarcity in a context of extreme weather conditions.

The Innovation Camp contributes to the broader objective of promoting place-based innovation approaches that can deliver systemic change—combining innovative technological solutions with new models of participatory multi-level governance, policy and regulatory innovation, and interregional cooperation.

The Innovation Camp is directly connected to:

  • The Transformative Innovation Policy Labs (TIPLabs) promoted by the ISE Mission in the Mediterranean region.
  • The EU Preparatory Action Innovation for place-based transformation implemented by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and funded the European Parliament.
  • The portfolio approach promoted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
