The Germ of Life project, in collaboration with the University of Patras, proudly participated in the 17ᵗʰ International Conference on Meteorology, Climatology & Atmospheric Physics (Comecap 2025), held from 28 September to 1 October 2025 in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Organized by the Hellenic Meteorological Society (EMTE) and hosted by the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, the conference brought together leading experts, researchers, and policymakers to exchange insights on pressing issues in meteorology, climatology, and atmospheric physics. The event was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Germ of Life project was represented by members of the University of Patras and Infotrend (Cyprus), who actively contributed to the conference through presentations and dissemination activities:
Prof. Athanasios Argiriou, Project Coordinator, delivered a dedicated presentation introducing the Germ of Life project, outlining its objectives, current progress, and contributions to understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean.
PhD candidate Michael Samouris presented a paper titled: “A Spatiotemporal Analysis of Droughts in Greece (1960–2022): Severity, Duration, and Frequency using SPI and SPEI indices”. The study, based on work conducted within the Germ of Life framework, explored long-term drought dynamics in Greece and their implications for agricultural resilience and sustainable water management.
Dissemination and collaboration
Throughout the event, the project maintained a dedicated stand featuring the Germ of Life banner, informational leaflets, and other dissemination materials. These served as focal points for engaging discussions with conference participants and potential collaborators.
In addition, colleagues from Infotrend (Cyprus), partners in the Germ of Life consortium, were also present, contributing to networking and outreach efforts and strengthening the project’s visibility and collaboration opportunities across the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The Germ of Life team’s participation in Comecap 2025 reflects its ongoing commitment to scientific excellence, collaboration, and advancing solutions for climate adaptation and sustainability.
