The Region of Western Greece organized an important event regarding Germ of Life project on April 29th. In the presence of a large number of representatives of institutions, authorities and associations of the region, the event ‘Civil Protection and Local Government – Challenges and Prospects’ was held in Patras, organized by the Civil Protection Directorate – Civil Protection Department of the Regional Unit of Achaia, in the context of the european project ‘Germ of Life – Digital Drought Risk Management that enables drought mitigation and adaptation strategies to restore the balance of the ecosystem in Mediterranean European Countries’, which is funded by the InterregEuro-MED program and national resources.
The Deputy Governor of Achaia, Fokion Zaimis, in his greeting, referred to the planning of the Region of Western Greece and the vigilance of its mechanism for the prevention and response to any possible event, in full cooperation with the Municipalities, Municipal Communities, the Fire Brigade, the Hellenic Police, the Ministries of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Citizen Protection, National Defense and all the competent Authorities. He also noted that at the level of prevention, the project implemented by the Region of Western Greece entitled ‘Development of an integrated system of surveillance, early warning and risk reduction from forest fires in the Region of Western Greece’ is extremely important and aims to reduce the risk and strengthen the protection of forest areas, utilizing cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions for fire protection. The system is installed in selected forest areas of the Western Greece Region and operates throughout the year, with particular emphasis on the fire season, offering significant benefits in the prevention and treatment of forest fires.

The event was also welcomed by the Director of Civil Protection, Maria Sotiropoulou, from the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian, while Professor of the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory of the University of Patras, Athanasios Argyriou, Scientific Manager and Leader Project of the Germ of Life project, spoke about the two meteorological stations that have been installed in the territory of Aigialeia for the needs of the timely preparation of Civil Protection against natural phenomena, but also for informing the rural community about the protection of their crops.
The event was attended by party representatives including the MP for Corinth of the New Democracy, Marilena Soukouli-Viliali, the Deputy Secretary for Climate Crisis and Resilience of PASOK, Diamantis Kanellopoulos, the Civil Protection Officer of the Democracy Movement, Hara Kafantari, the representative of the Municipality of Patras, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Michalis Anastasiou, as well as representatives of the services of the Region, the Fire Department and the Police, as well as radio amateurs and volunteer firefighters who participate in the teams responding to natural disaster incidents.
